Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsSolar company lead generation works best when you stop treating every inquiry the same. A homeowner worried about a power bill, a family that just lost power in a storm, a builder framing new houses and a warehouse owner with a flat roof each search differently, trust different signals and need a different next step.
This guide to lead generation for solar companies sorts the buyers, matches each to the channels that actually reach them, and explains the tracking and follow-up that keep a long sales cycle from going cold.
Customer types
Largest volume, slow decision
Searches for solar installers near me, solar cost for a given house size, and whether panels fit an older roof. Compares several proposals over weeks and leans on reviews, financing options and how clearly a company explains net metering.
Often triggered by an outage
Searches home battery installation, whole-house backup or what runs during a power cut after a storm. Urgency is higher than for panels alone, and the buyer may already own a system that needs a battery added.
Shared decision with a roofer
Owners facing a new roof ask whether to add solar at the same time. This buyer is reached through roofing partners and pages about installing panels on a new roof.
Few contacts, large volume
A production builder or custom home builder wants a reliable installer for new construction. This is a relationship and bid process, not a search ad.
Fewer inquiries, larger projects
Owners of warehouses, farms, churches and shops search for commercial solar installers and ask about roof condition, usage patterns and financing structures.
Existing system owners
People with panels already installed search for repair, monitoring problems, inverter replacement or expanding the array. They are cheaper to reach and can become battery sales.
Customer type by channel
| Buyer | Best channels to reach them | First response that works | Follow-up that keeps them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homeowner, bill-driven | Map listing, town and utility-area landing pages, search ads for installer and cost terms, reviews | A call or text within the same business day, then a short question about roof, bill and shade before sending a design | A proposal walkthrough call, a check-in after each competing quote is likely received, a financing explainer |
| Battery or backup | Search ads for backup and battery terms, landing page for outage questions, storm-season content | A same-day callback, because outage interest fades as the lights come back on | A clear scope of what runs during an outage, a site survey date, financing details |
| Roof-replacement crossover | Referral partnerships with roofers, a page about solar with a new roof, partner co-marketing | A direct hand-off from the roofer with the roof timeline attached | Coordinated scheduling so panels go on once the roof is done |
| Builder or developer | Direct outreach, local builder association events, a builder-focused page with capabilities and permitting experience | A named contact and a short capabilities summary | Regular check-ins tied to their build calendar |
| Commercial or agricultural | Search for commercial solar, a dedicated page on usage analysis and financing structures, industry referrals | A call from someone who can discuss load, roof and ownership structure, not a sales script | An assessment, a clear proposal and a point person for the owner and the property manager |
| Existing system owner | Email to past customers, a service page, a map listing with repair as a listed service | A quick scheduling link and a clear answer on whether you service systems you did not install | A maintenance reminder and a battery or expansion conversation |
Behind the channels
Solar is a considered purchase. Even a motivated homeowner often takes weeks, collects more than one proposal and checks reviews before saying yes. That changes what a good lead program measures. A request that does not sign this month is not a failure; it may be a prospect in an ordinary decision cycle. The program has to keep you visible and useful while they decide.
It also means that quality matters more than raw count in lead generation for solar companies. A homeowner with a shaded roof, a renter or someone outside your licensed territory costs real sales time. Intake questions about ownership, roof, approximate electric bill and location let your team prioritize without sounding like a bouncer. Most trades keep quote forms short, but solar is one where a few extra qualifying fields can protect your estimators' time.
Be careful with claims. Incentive rules, utility policies and net metering terms change and differ by state and utility, so pages and ads should point to current official sources or leave exact figures to the proposal. Promises about savings, payback periods or guaranteed outcomes can create trouble with regulators and with customers, and we do not write them. Check your state's contractor licensing and consumer protection rules for how solar offers may be advertised.
Many companies also use lead marketplaces and quote-comparison sites. They can fill gaps, but the leads are often shared and the sites are paid by installers, so judge them by signed contracts, not by volume. Owned channels, such as your listing, local pages and ads, tend to build value you keep, which is why most of this program focuses there.
Monthly rhythm
Each month, list every inquiry with its source: map listing call, landing page form, search ad, referral partner, past customer or marketplace. Mark which became a site survey and which became a signed contract.
Look at the time between request and first human contact. In a long sales cycle, the first call still decides whether a homeowner includes you among the two or three proposals they compare.
Move stale proposals to a lost-reason list: price, financing, roof condition, chose another installer, went quiet. Patterns here show which pages and follow-up steps to fix.
Add or revise pages for the buyer types you want more of, such as battery backup, commercial roofs or solar with a roof replacement, using real project photos you have permission to show.
Contact roofers, electricians, builders and property managers whose customers overlap yours. One reliable referral partner can be worth more than a month of ads.
Move spend toward the sources that produce signed contracts and trim the ones that only produce form fills.
Questions owners ask
It is the system of getting qualified homeowners, builders and commercial owners to ask your company for a proposal: your map listing, local landing pages, search ads, reviews and referral partners, supported by call tracking and a clear follow-up routine. It is not the same as buying shared leads.
The sales cycle is longer, buyers compare several proposals, and many questions involve financing, utility rules and roof condition. That means follow-up and education matter as much as the first click. Programs should measure signed contracts and survey rates, not just inquiries.
Pricing depends on the channels you choose. Our landing page program starts at $495 a month, managed ad accounts start at $895 a month with ad spend paid to the platform, and the broader search program starts at $1,495 a month. Plans run month to month with no setup fee, so solar company lead generation never locks you in.
No, and be wary of anyone who does. Results depend on your territory, competition, offers and how fast your team follows up. We can show the sources, calls and forms tracked each month so you can judge for yourself.
No. We build and run the channels you own: your listing, pages and ad accounts. Nothing we set up is resold to other installers, and it stays with your business if you leave.
Treat incentive and savings claims with caution. Rules change and vary by location and household. Link to current official sources or discuss specifics in the proposal, and check your state rules on advertising solar offers.
They tend to be tied to outages and storms, so speed and a clear explanation of what the system can power matter most. A dedicated page and a same-day callback usually do more than a long nurture sequence.
ChatGPT ads are an early channel worth only a small measured test for now. Clear, consistent business information across the web is a more reliable way to appear when people ask AI tools about local installers.
